75 persons rescued from fire in 2013

Abuja - The FCT Administration said 75 persons were rescued from fire due to the prompt response to distress calls in Abuja between January and March 2013.

This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by Mr Mohammad Sule, Chief Press Secretary to the FCT Minister.

The release said that during the period, eight persons lost their lives during the rescue missions.

A breakdown of the figure showed that 21, 21 and 33 persons were rescued in January, February and March 2013, respectively.

According to the release, FCT Administration also saved property valued N1.1billion while N257.9 million worth of property was lost during the same period.

"The FCT Administration saved property valued N258.2 million in January; N594.2 million in February and N286.4 million in March 2013.

The statement also said the FCT Urban Affairs Department received 162 fire calls with 56 in January; 61 in February and 45 in March 2013.

"The Minister commended staff of the department for their pro-activeness in handling emergencies and enjoined them to redouble their efforts to further reduce the number of casualties in future."
