82 special marshals suspended in Ebonyi

13 February 2014, 16:01

Abakaliki - The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ebonyi has de-marshaled 55 persons and suspended 82 special marshals following their inability to meet its assessment standards.

The suspension was contained in a statement issued in Abakaliki on Wednesday and signed by the state’s Sector Commander, Taiwo Eseyin, and Special Marshal Coordinator, Dr Henry Urochukwu.

The statement said the measures were aimed at sanitising the activities of the marshals.

It said special marshals were expected to be of proven integrity with genuine means of livelihood in the society.

It directed the affected persons to submit all FRSC stickers, regalia, identity cards and other materials to the sector commander or unit commanders in Afikpo and Ishiagu on or before February  20, 2014.

The statement warned them against withholding the particulars as any action in that direction would be termed a criminal offence.

It said the list of the affected special marshals had been displayed at the sector command and all unit commands, adding that it would also be published in some tabloids.

The statement explained that special marshals operated in all parts of the country to assist the commission in curtailing excesses of drivers on the roads.

“They are also empowered to arrest culprits whenever the need arises to make the duties of regular officers easier,” it said.

The statement announced that the Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of the FRSC, Osita Chidoka, had given approval for the recruitment of new special marshals for the Ebonyi Sector Command and its component units.

It stated that only those who scaled through the final screening would be recruited as special marshals in the state.
