9 new federal varsities commence operations

31 January 2013, 16:09

London - All the nine federal Universities established in Nigeria in 2011 have fully commenced operations, Prof Rugayyatu Rufai, the Education Minister, has said.

Rufai disclosed this on Thursday in London during a visit on Dr Dalhatu Tafida, Nigaria's High Commissioner to the UK.

She said that the universities are located at Dutse, Dutsin-Ma, Kashere , Lafia, Lokoja, Ndufu-Alike-Ikwo, Otuoke, Oye-Ekiti and Wukari.

The minister, who spoke against the backdrop of government's commitment to promote ``Access and Quality’’ in education, said the newly established universities were open to qualified candidates.

She said that government was also focusing on strengthening the institutional management of education through teacher training.

``We are in the UK for the Education World Forum, after years of attendance, we insisted on active participation and this is the first time Nigeria has made a presentation at Summit.

``The Forum had theme ``Quantity, Quality and Impact’’ which is exactly what Nigeria is focusing on in the transformation of the education sector,’’ the Minister said.

Responding, Tafida commended the minister for her efforts in restructuring the nation's educational sector, saying you are among the ministers that are doing very well.

He said that the High Commission had also been strengthened for efficient service delivery, noting that the issuance of visa and passport were now being processed within a short period of time.

The News agency of Nigeria reports that about 250 visas and passports are processed daily by the High Commission.
