APC demands probe into Maiduguri suicide bomb attempt

16 March 2015, 07:59Augustine Osayande

Abuja - The Borno State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has demanded a probe into the failed bomb attempt at a camp for internally displaced people at the Government Girls Secondary School in Yerwa, Maiduguri.

The party alleged that the bomb might have been planted by those bent on scuttling the general elections in the state, especially members of the ruling People's Democratic Party in the state.

The state chairman of APC, Alhaji Ali Bukar Dalori, call for urgent and intensive investigation to establish if the attempt had any connection with those who had openly worked against the March 28 and April 11 rescheduled elections taking place at the IDP camps as decided by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The APC said it was deeply worried that buried explosives were found at the IDP camp when it is known to all citizens of Borno State and other Nigerians that members of the PDP affiliated to a former Governor of Borno State had consistently disapproved ongoing plans by INEC to hold elections in all the camps.

The Borno State Emergency Management Agency, the National Emergency Management Agency and the Nigerian Red Cross and the military are managing the camps to enable citizens displaced as a result of insurgency attacks and occupation in affected local government areas vote.

Dalori commended the military officials for their competent proactive that foiled the attempt to bomb one of the IDPs camps.

"We congratulate the military for foiling that evil attempt to kill IDPs that are already traumatized. We urge security not to relent in their patriotic efforts to defeat insurgents as victory is theirs by the grace of Almighty God," he said.

He said the APC and the Borno State Government had over time been alerting Nigerians and the international community of plans by some politicians to stop elections from taking place in Borno State.

“Every resident of Maiduguri and indeed all political stakeholders are very much aware that majority of candidates for different offices under the PDP have openly expressed their disapproval for the INEC to allow IDPs to cast their votes in camps being jointly managed by the State and Federal Government.

"Rather, the PDP supporters affiliated to a former Governor, are insisting that displaced persons should return to their communities recently liberated to exercise voting rights,” Dalori said.
