Men of the underworld have struck various parts of the once peaceful Tedi-Town in Ojo local government area of Lagos. They have mesmerizingly continued to defy the town even with the presence of local vigilantes on duty, with a two weeks incursion of the town.
The first set of armed robbers invaded the waterside area of the town numbering over forty of them who had made their entry into that part of the town through the waterways. According to one of the vigilantes names Saka Sule, he said they were on their normal routine check around 2a.m when they saw some strange movements and they beckoned to see who they were, the objects looked like human beings and they ran and began shooting into the air. He further narrated that he and his partner were to guard that part of the town but that a friend of their also joined then that night making them three people on duty that night.
The shootout lasted over two hours thirty minutes. When the gun battle between the vigilantes and the armed robbers got fierce, the armed robbers dashed into the house of a highly placed custom official to seek refuge. In trying to break in, the guard of the house named Adamu killed. “No matured person was in the house, just the children alone, because me and my wife had gone on an official assignment at Abuja” said Festus Aligbhe the owner of the house. He further hinted that they were therefore unable to gain access into the house because the doors were security doors and also the children went into hiding but the guard was killed.
The vigilantes on duty were able to shoot at the armed robbers targeting about five of them, while one of the vigilante was shot in the leg. A visit to the Adetunji Memorail Hospital where the vigilantes were receiving medical attention, the nurse on duty, Bose Akinlade said one of the vigilantes is receiving treatment from bullet wounds and another is been kept under observation because he had temporarily got deaf due to the heavy gunfire and the third had bruises over his body due to gun scratch but he was not wounded.
In another incident, at the Church Street/ Olaoluwa street Axis of the town, another set of armed robbers attacked a pastor named Pastor Ezerike who owns a church named God’s Own Evangelical Ministries. The armed robbers made their way through a wooden footbridge that linked Tedi-Town to Agric Estate. According to Mrs. Ezerike, the armed robbers were on the trail of the church money in the possession of his husband. They shot the Pastor and took away the undisclosed sum of money. The pastor was taken to Adetunji memorial hospital but the hospital refused to attend to him.
Also using the same wooden foot bridge, the Armed Robbers on 18th July 2012 attacked the house of Pastor and Mrs. Adeoye. According to the Husband, Pastor Adeoye, the armed robbers were already in his compound while he wanted to switch off his generating set around 1a.m, they accosted his and began their operations on the house. He explained further that he was tied to the chair and his mouth sealed. They ransacked all of the flat and took away laptops, wristwatches and other valuables, still unsatisfied, the Armed Robbers collected their ATM cards and asked for their Pin numbers, with a threat that of they disclosed the wrong pin, they would come back and kill them.
The wife Mrs. Adeoye was crying when interviewed, she was therefore able to say that her life savings were deposited in her account and also her husbands and it was only the help of their maid Anthonia that put a call through to vigilantes but before the vigilantes could come around the armed robbers had left.
In a swift reaction, the chairman of the Landlord Association Church Street, Mr. Amos Omoraka said that right from the incident which involved the shooting of a pastor, they had ordered everybody to switch off their generators by 10:30pm but some people disobeyed that was why the Armed Robbers gained entry.
Since after these armed robbery incidents, the whole town has been in silence with the hearts of the residents of the community pounding on who the next victim of armed robbery attack will be. Meanwhile, security arrangements have also been beefed up to effectively secure the lives of the people.
