Abia State commissions new digital library

27 January 2015, 07:51Augustine Osayande

Abuja - Locals are poised to benefit from a high speed internet digital library that the Abia State has commissioned.

The facility is delivered via optic fibre cable network and backed up using microwave link to ensure an ‘always available’ status.

Speaking during the commissioning, Governor Theodore Orji said the project would serve as a gateway to usher the state into an era of digital excellence.

He said library would distribute internet services using a WIFI system that has enough capacity and coverage to residents and institutions within a 5 km radius.

In his remarks, the consultant of the project, John Okiyi Kalu, said the library had 24 hours electricity supply with two standby generators and online inverters system capable of powering the entire library complex for over nine hours.

It also has over 30 million digital resources that can be updated available to all users over an intranet.

Kalu added that the library facility could comfortably seat 100 users simultaneously, each provided with a computer and access to all digital resources and the internet.

He said entry was free after issuance of a direct data capture (DDC) library card that allowed holders access to all available resources within a comfortable and fully air-conditioned environment.
