Lokoja - The Minster of Works, Mr Mike Onolememen, on Tuesday in Lokoja, said that the Abuja-Lokoja highway would be completed in 2014.
Onolememen made the announcement when he inspected the ongoing work on the road.
According to him, section four of the road consists of 181 km, while work has been completed on 125km stretch of the road.
"By the end of the first quarter of 2014, this particular road dualisation will be completed,
"We have certainly attained over 50 per cent of work on the road and having achieved this, I am sure the ministry will surely deliver as assured,’’ the minister said.
Onolememen said that parts of the funds from the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) were being used to fund the project.
"The programme is benefiting from SURE-P, with that I am certain that money constraint will not be a problem," he said.
He expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done so far on the road, calling for speedy completion of major routes such as the Gwagwalada-Giri axis for free flow of traffic.
The minister who identified the initial design of the road without drain filters as the major problem in the construction of the road, said that the problem had been corrected.
"In the course of construction, we found out that section one,(the international airport link road to Sheda Village) and the section two (Sheda Village to Abaji) were prone to flooding.
"If we did not introduce the filter drainages, the section will be easily flooded or damaged immediately if it is completed.
"But we have introduced filter drainage, with that we can have good road structures and I can assure that the roads will stand the test of time," he said.
NAN reports that section one of the road from the International Airport link road to Sheda Village is costing N28.6 billion while the contract is being handled by Messrs Dantata and Sawoe Nigeria Ltd.
Section two from Sheda Village to Abaji, costing the nation N31.2 billion is being executed by Messrs Reynolds Construction Company.
Section three from Abaji to Konton Karfe Village is being handled by Messrs Bulletine Construction Company at a cost of N25.8 billion.
Section four of the project consisting the Konton Karfe to Lokoja axis is being handled by Gitto Construction Company at a contract sum of N31 billion.
