Accident claims 10 lives, injure 20 others

18 February 2013, 07:30

Kano - Alhaji Kassim Musa, the spokesman of the Kano State Fire Service on Sunday confirmed that 10 persons died and 20 injured in an accident in Dukundai village in Takai local Government Area.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), that the accident involved a Toyota bus and J5 bus which caught fire and burnt some of the occupants on Saturday.

He said that the vehicles collided and burst into flames.

Musa said that the accident was the second in two weeks where 10 people had died on the same road.

He said that the firemen were called to the rescue around 11:35 a.m. by villagers, adding that the road had witnessed several fatal accidents over time.

"We have observed that the road has become a terrible place where accidents always happened.

"Just last week, we recorded 10 deaths on that same road and now this.

"The drivers on that route are very reckless and we hope to call a round table with other stakeholders to stop this wanton loss of lives."

Alhaji Kabir Nadabo, the officer in charge of operations of the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC), also told NAN that the victims were taken to Sekoni Specialist Hospital, Dutse, Jigawa State.

He attributed the fire incident to the fuel that the bus driver bought few kilometres from the scene of the accident.

In a related development, Musa told NAN that six children, aged between two and 12 lost their lives while seven others were injured in a fire incident at the water board staff quarters in Challawa area of Kano.

He said that the deceased, who were from the same father, were killed when the roof of the building collapsed during the inferno on Saturday.

The spokesman said that the service rescued seven persons from the inferno when it reached the scene at about 12:50 a.m.
