Adamawa - Adamawa Government says it has procured 60 trucks of fertiliser for distribution to farmers affected by the recent flooding in the state.
Mr Kobis Thimnu, the Secretary to the State Government disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Yola.
Thimnu, who is also the Chairman of the State Flood Quick Response Committee, said that early yielding variety of rice, maize and sorghum seedlings have been distributed to the farmers.
He said that the procurement was funded from the N500 million flood assistance, which the Federal Government gave the state.
Thimnu also said that the committee focused more on agriculture because many of the flood victims were farmers.
``The state is an agrarian state and that is why we are giving priority to food security by providing fertiliser and seedlings to the farmers,’’ the SSG said.
He also explained that part of the fund was used to buy foodstuff, clothes and drugs for the flood victims.
According to him, cash will also be given to the victims to enable them resettled.
He siad that the state government has approved cash for distribution to the to affected local governments based on level of destruction observed by the assessment team.
``Lamurde Local Government, which is worst affected, was given N29 million, Numan Local Government got N24 million while Yola South Local Government got N19 million and so on,’’ Thimnu said.
He explained that committees have been inaugurated at the local government level to handle the distribution of the farm inputs and relief materials.
He said that state commissioners representing their respective local government would serve as chairman of the committee.
According to the SSG, livestock, farmland, houses, roads and drains estimated to cost more than N20 billion were lost in the flood disaster.
NAN reports that this year's flood was described in the state as the worst in 40 years.
