Ajimobi visits Alaafin’s burnt palace, laments damage

10 January 2013, 08:02

Ibadan - Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State on Wednesday paid a sympathy visit to the Alafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, to commiserate with him over the fire that destroyed his palace.

He said the fire destroyed artifacts, ornaments and traditional relics of Yoruba race. "The fire touched virtually everywhere and it was very devastating. It consumed virtually everything, including traditional attires, ornaments,” he said.

The governor said that from his personal assessment of the incident, the damage done to the palace was irreparable and colossal. He appealed to fire fighters to be more dedicated and effective in their operations, saying that the effect of the fire could have been minimised if urgent action was taken to put out the fire.

Ajimobi promised to assist the monarch in the reconstruction of the palace. He said that as a foremost traditional ruler, supporting the traditional ruler was the same as supporting Yorubaland.

"As a government, we are going to support the Kabiyesi and the Kabiyesi, as you know, has been at the forefront of support for the present administration in the state,” Ajimobi said.
