Another case of bird flu confirmed in Rivers

30 January 2015, 12:35

Port Harcourt - The Rivers Government said on Thursday that the Avian Influenza, also called bird flu, had spread to another poultry farm in Port Harcourt.

The latest incident is coming two weeks after the first case was recorded.

Dr Nnanna Onyekwere, the Director of Public Health in the state Ministry of Health, said in Port Harcourt that hundreds of birds in the farm had been eliminated.

He said government had received information about the outbreak in a private farm and sent samples for analysis at the National Veterinary Institute in Jos for confirmation.

Onyekwere said the affected farm had been quarantined and decontaminated.

"There is no report of human infection. Government officials are working with the staff of the farm to instruct them on necessary steps to take.

"The officials have been guarding the farm workers on what to do if they notice more infection,’’ he said.

The director said experts from the ministries of agriculture and health were on top of the situation and working hard to ensure that they curtailed the spread.
