Applicant remanded in prison over murder

01 June 2015, 21:51

Abuja - A 21-year-old applicant, Hananiya Ayuba, was remanded in prison on Monday by an FCT Area Court, Lugbe, Abuja, over dangerous, reckless driving and murder.

Ayuba of Tafawa Balewa, Bauchi State was docked on a two-count charge of causing death by dangerous, reckless driving without licence.

The prosecutor, Lliyau Maji, told the court that a distress call was received from the officer in charge (OIC), ACO Estate Police Outpost station on March 3 at about 9.15 pm.

Maji said that the accused drove a Mazda 323 vehicle with Registration HC250 AAA, owned by one Sunday David, along ACO Estate shopping complex in a dangerous and reckless manner.

He alleged that the accused drove the car without considering other road users and knocked down one Mrs Maria Isaac and one Miss Elizabeth Yusuf.

Maji said that as a result of the accident they sustained serious fractures and were rushed to the National Hospital, Abuja.

He also said that Isaac later died while Yusuf had been discharged, and that during police investigations, it was discovered that the accused was not a licensed driver.

The prosecutor added that the offence contravened sections 27and 7(1) of the road traffic act and that the case was still under investigations.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the offences but could not convince the Presiding Judge, Gambo Garba.

Garba then ordered that the accused be remanded in Kuje Prison until June 26 for further hearing on the matter.
