Abuja - The Bayelsa State Government has congratulated former President, Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, on his 89th birthday.
In a congratulatory message he signed, State Governor Seriake Dickson, described the former President as Nigeria's most iconic, detribalized and foremost democrat.
“On behalf of the Government and good people of Bayelsa State, I hereby congratulate one of Nigeria's most iconic, detribalized and foremost democrats, Alhaji Shehu Shagari and Second Republic President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the auspicious occasion of his 89th birthday. Your Excellency, as a government, we wish to express our love and appreciation of your unique and exemplary leadership qualities, whose service to our nation was sterling and most remarkable,” stated Dickson.
The governor added that as President of the great country and in all the several leadership positions that Shagari was privileged to occupy, he brought to the fore such positive attributes as tolerance, honesty, selflessness, patriotism and love, rising above all manner of divisions.
“You demonstrated an uncommon capacity to build bridges of unity and understanding amongst the diverse people and cultures of our nation and above all, you were very accommodating and exemplary. These are virtues all political leaders, especially we the younger politicians of this generation should emulate and espouse,” said Dickson.
The governor pray that God granted the former President good health and wisdom to contribute meaningfully to the growth of democracy and national development.
“As you deservedly approach the four scores and ten mark, we pray that, God in His infinite mercies will continue to grant you good health and wisdom to contribute meaningfully to the growth of our democracy and national development.”
Shagari, who was born on February 25 in 1925, was President between 1979 and 1983.
