Abuja - Three people have been killed in an apparent shootout between police and suspected militants in the Nembe area of Bayelsa on Monday.
The suspected militants attacked a a patrol van belonging to Bayelsa State security outfit Operation Doo Akpo when a gun battle ensued, Punch reports.
The slain policeman, identified as Mathew Simon, was allegedly killed by stray bullets fired at the hands of the assailants.

The reason for the attack remains unclear but some suspect that the militants may have entered the area in order to abduct workers constructing the Ogbia-Nembe Road.
The militants are said to have fled the scene with the bodies of their two deceased colleagues.
