Benin duo to serve time for illegal oil deals

22 May 2014, 21:37

Abuja - Two illegal oil dealers have been convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment without an option of fine for illegally dealing in petroleum products.

Idris Abubakar and Ibrahim Hassan were sentenced when they appeared before the Federal High Court sitting in Benin, Edo State.

The convicts were among eleven suspected illegal dealers of petroleum products arrested by men of the Joint Task Force, forth Brigade of Nigerian Army in Benin in 2012.

They were handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation and prosecution.

They were subsequently arraigned a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, forgery and illegal dealing in petroleum product.

After diligent prosecution, the court found them guilty on count four which borders on uttering of forged waybill and convicted them

The judge said the convicts could not be said to be ignorant that the waybill was forged since they are not new in the business.
