Benue Assembly orders security agenecies to contain clashes

20 February 2013, 09:03

Makurdi -  Benue House of Assembly has directed security agencies in the state to contain the clashes between Mbayion and Utange communities in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area.

The directive was contained in a motion passed by the Assembly on Tuesday in Makurdi.

The motion was moved by Mr Ianna Jato (PDP Katsina-Ala East), citing the insecurity in his constituency.

Jato told the House that one Terzugwe Jebu was murdered in his house at Tordonga by suspected hoodlums from Mbayion community.

The legislator said the incident led to the killings and wanton destruction of property in the communities, stressing that the insecurity in that part of the state had become a matter of concern to the legislators.

Many legislators supported the motion and urged security agencies to draft personnel to the affected parts of the state and intensify security measures across the state.

Mrs Hembadoon Amenna (PDP Katsina-Ala West) urged the House not to usurp the duties of the Katsina council chairman, saying the matter was not beyond him.

After the motion was adopted, the Speaker, Mr Emmanuel Ayua, appealed to the two communities to embrace peace and dialogue in resolving their differences.

He called on the state government to wade into the matter as the situation had already claimed lives.
