Boko Haram attacks Maiduguri, army repels but hundreds flee

14 May 2015, 13:14

Maiduguri — Hundreds of Boko Haram extremists tried to attack the biggest army base in northeast Nigeria overnight but met fierce resistance from soldiers who fired heavy artillery throughout the night.

Hundreds of people fled the neighborhood around Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri.

The army imposed a 24-hour curfew Thursday amid fears some insurgents have slipped through trenches and sand walls.

A fighter in a civilian defense group, Ibrahim Musa, said he was shocked to see that the Islamic extremists can still attack in such numbers.

A multinational force and Nigerian troops have forced Boko Haram from all towns and cities in the northeast in a 14-week-long offensive that Nigerian officials say has the militants hemmed into the Sambisa Forest, more than 100 kilometers south of Maiduguri.
