Boko Haram attempts "futile"

27 May 2013, 10:03Augustine Osayande

Abuja - Members of Boko Haram will not succeed in their plans to topple the Nigerian government, a prominent Islamic scholar said this past weekend.

Sheik Ahmed Gumi said members of the sect would soon regret their actions.

“They will not live to enjoy the killings they did; they have only destroyed themselves.

"I call on all those killing people, including Boko Haram members, to stop. They are only destroying themselves, and they will never succeed in their goals,” he said.

He welcomed the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states by President Goodluck Jonathan.

“The state of emergency is a political decision because the army and police have all the facilities to fight Boko Haram without imposing such law," said Gumi.

He said state forces will eventually get the better of the militants. “The Boko Haram group does not have the firepower needed. A well-equipped police force can curtail their activities," he said.
