Borno earmarks N20m for sports facilities

11 February 2013, 07:24

Maiduguri - The Borno State Government said on Sunday that it had set aside N20 million for the provision of sports facilities in schools to revive sports at the grassroots level.

The Deputy Governor of the state, Alhaji Zanna Mustapha disclosed during a visit to the Government Girls Secondary School, Yerwa in Maiduguri.

Mustapha said that the measure was taken to ensure that the state retained its premier position in sports development.

"Borno has made its name over the years as one of the best in terms of sports development.

"Unfortunately, over the years, we have witnessed some setbacks in sports."

He explained that part of the money would be used to rehabilitate sports facilities in schools, while the rest would be spent on procuring new ones.

"The money is meant to rehabilitate facilities in secondary schools located in Maiduguri metropolis as well as procure new ones where they are none," he said.

The deputy governor urged the students to engage in sports in their leisure time so that the state could reclaim its lost glory in grassroots sports development.
