Burglars vandalise NUJ secretariat in Ebonyi

30 August 2013, 15:08

Abakaliki - Suspected burglars broke into the NUJ Press Centre in Abakaliki on Thursday and carted off equipment worth about N1.5 million.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incident took place in the morning with the burglars removing information and communication technology equipment recently installed in the union’s secretariat by the Ebonyi government.

The centre is located on the Enugu-Abakaliki expressway with little or no social or economic activities in the area.

Veronica Osim, the Chairman of the union, described the incident as unfortunate, regrettable and capable of demoralising its members.

She listed the stolen items to include computer units, power supply equipment, air-conditioners, chairs, television set and a generating set.

She said that on discovering the act, she alerted the members who headed for the state police headquarters to make a formal report.

“A police detachment was deployed to the secretariat to conduct investigation and we are optimistic that the culprits will be apprehended soon,’’ she said.

Sylvester Igbo, the command’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident and said the command would ensure the arrest and prosecution of the burglars.
