Bushfire razes cement factory

02 February 2013, 10:00

Abeokuta - Fire has gutted the premises of Gateway Portland Cement Factory located at Aro on Abeokuta/Lagos expressway on Friday.

The inferno resulted from bush burning in the company's neighbourhood.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the fire started at 4.30 p. m burning eight articulated vehicles in the premises.

The Import Manager of the company, Mr Festus Sunday, while speaking with newsmen, described the incident as unfortunate, attributing it to bush burning.

"People should not just burn bush without recourse to public interest.

"The government and other relevant agencies are doing their best to educate and sensitise on the need for people not to be burning bush indiscriminately, `` he added.

Also speaking, an official of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) rescue team, Mr Sodiq Owolabi, said that members of the Corps did their best to curb the spread of the inferno.

He stressed the need for the people to handle objects that could result in fire outbreak with extra care.

The officials of Ogun State Fire Service were also at the scene of the incident to put the situation under control
