Lagos - The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) arrested three Chinese nationals and closed their factory for allegedly assembling substandard phones.
The SON enforcement team, led by Engr Bede Obayi, said the factory was located at Allen Ikeja in Lagos.
The arrested men were on duty during the raid.
ccording to the team, Products evacuated from the factory to SON’s warehouse at Ogba Industrial Estate, include MBO Mobile Technology, G. Best and lithium batteries, among other brands.
Speaking to journalists after the raid, Obayi said the activities of such firms were affecting the economy negatively.
“We are sealing off the factory and arresting these Chinese because they are killing the Nigerian economy and the environment by bringing substandard hand sets into Nigeria and we can no longer tolerate it,” he said.
He said the raid followed the lapse of the January 2014 deadline for the certification of handsets.
"Every handset in Nigeria must be registered on our e-registration platform for us to know the quality and to know those who are behind it for traceability,” said Obayi.
He said the confiscated handsets were not certified.
"Where these Chinese are living is where they are assembling them. They are low quality hand sets. The Chinese are not doing the business in the right way,” he said.
He said the suspects would be handed over to the police will the factory would be totally shut down.
