Christian group wants Taraba Governor removed

25 April 2014, 08:45Augustine Osayande

Abuja - The Taraba state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) called for the removal of the Acting Governor, Alhaji Garba Umar, accusing him of responsibility in the ongoing killings in the state.

The association called on the State House of Assembly to, as a matter of urgency, impeach him and President Goodluck Jonathan to remove the Acting Governor for his alleged failure to protect human lives.

According to the association, instead protecting human lives the acting governor "has become a murderer himself through the use of Islamic militants to shade innocent blood in the state."

Briefing journalists in its secretariat in Abuja, the state Chairman of the association, Bishop Timothy Yahaya, said, “We are calling on the members of the State House of Assembly to reconsider their steps and be pro-active by initiating moves to immediately impeach the Acting Governor.”

The association described the ongoing killings in the state as an “organized plots to exterminate Christian in the state”.

They observed that since the acting governor came there has been crisis in the state”.

They alleged that the Acting Governor is deeply involved in the ongoing crisis.

“Under Garba Umar sluttering have being the order day in the state. The Acting Governor is solely responsible for the crime that is going on in state.”

The association further alleged that the killings and destruction going on are only being visited on Christian community.

“Several towns and villages belonging to only Christians have been attacked, destroyed and many people have been killed while few that survive now live like destitute where they are taking refuge”.
Reacting on the allegations, the Special Assistant to the Acting Governor on Media and Publicity, Aron Atmas, expressed "sadness" that a well-respected Association like CAN could made such “unfounded allegations” against the Acting Governor.

“It is very unfortunate that the leadership of CAN will make sweeping statements that are unsubstantiated. A responsible religion organization like CAN should not make such unsubstantiated remarks.”
He said the actions of CAN as further were capable of dividing the people of the state.

“They should provide evidence. Their comments are not responsible enough. In Benue state CAN did not accused Governor Gabriel Suswam of sponsoring terrorists. CAN in Taraba state is trying to divide the populations of the state.”
