Church leader busted for raping minor

04 July 2013, 09:10 Augustine Osayande

Abuja -  A 45-year-old Bishop has been arrested for allegedly raping and impregnating a minor.

River State police confirmed the arrest of Chinweike Nwabueze who is alleged to have committed the offence on the pretence that he was conducting a healing session on the 15-year-old.

He allegedly offered the girl money to abort.

River State Police Public Relations Officer, Angela Agabe, said the matter came to light after the mother of the girl reported the matter to the Police when the girl discovered the child was bleeding profusely following the illegal abortion.

Agabe urged parents to monitor their children and shield them from abuse.

"We should be careful of the church we worship and how to handle our children because all that glitters is not gold," she said.

The suspect is expected to appear in court soon for charges of statutory rape.

The age of consent in the Nigeria is 18.
