Akwa Ibom - A worker was on Thursday killed while another was injured when a mini water tank under construction collapsed in Ukana Iba community in the Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom.
A witness told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the two workers were working on the water tank when it suddenly collapsed and killed one of them.
“The tank fell from the top and smashed the man upstairs before crashing to the ground.
“The man, who climbed up fell and died immediately while the one on ground sustained grave injuries,” the eyewitness said.
It could not be confirmed immediately whether the water project was sponsored by the state or the Federal Government as there was no signpost at the site.
Confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP. Etim Dickson, said the injured worker, Godwin Ayilu, had been rushed to the Ukana Cottage Hospital.
He said that the name of the deceased could not be ascertained immediately.
The PPRO said the incident took place at Ukana Iba village near Umoren and Co Filling Station.
Speaking with NAN, a Community Leader, Ephraim Ekpenyong, said that the villagers were shock over the incident.
Ekpenyong said that since Gov. Godswill Akpabio came to power in 2007, so many development projects had come to the village and that no such mishap had occurred.
He appealed to contractors handling projects in the community to use durable and quality materials to avoid disasters.
