Court remands man, 18, in prison for unlawful possession of firearm

14 May 2015, 11:01

Sango-Ota - An Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun on Wednesday remanded an 18-year-old man, John Emmanuel, in prison custody for unlawful possession of firearm.

Emmanuel, of no fixed address, is facing a two-count charge of unlawful possession of firearm and impersonation.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Rosemary Brown, told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 28 at a police check point in Ota.

Brown said that the accused introduced himself as a police officer when he was found with two rounds of live ammunition without licence at a police check point.

"The accused wore a police vest with the inscription Rapid Response Squad and introduced himself as a police officer,
knowing that he is not," she said.

The prosecutor added that the offences contravened sections 3(1) and 109(b) of the Robbery and Firearm (Special Provision) Act, Laws of the Federation, 2004.

However, the accused pleaded not guilty and the Magistrate, Temitope Adebutu, ordered that he should
be remanded in prison custody.

She then adjourned the matter until June 8 for bail application.
