Court remands student for arms possession

06 July 2012, 16:23

Kwara - The accused was  arraigned on a one-count charge of  illegal possession of firearms  in contravention of  Section 3(1) of  the Firearms (special provision) Act Cap R11 Laws  of  Nigeria 2004.

According to the charge sheet, the accused was arrested by a police surveillance patrol team while walking toward Texaco Petrol Station in Oja-Oba area   with a black polythene bag.

It further said that a dismantled single barrel gun was  discovered in the polythene bag while the accused could not give a satisfactory explanation on  the fire arms.

The police prosecutor, Alhassan Jubril, urged the court to remand the accused in prison custody on the ground that the offence was not ordinarily bailable.

In her ruling, Magistrate Ibijoke Olawoyin ordered the remand of the accused at the  Medium Security Prison at  Mandala, Ilorin, and adjourned the case to  July 18.
