Abuja - Cross River State Governor, Prof. Ben Ayade, has approved house-to-house collection of refuse as a new system of waste evacuation in the state.
The governor also directed the state waste management agency to remove all refuse bins currently displayed on major roads within Calabar Municipality, Calabar South and its environs and distribute them to every compound and house in the affected areas.
He directed that refuse trucks henceforth would evacuate refuse from house to house at regular intervals.
He said it was the intention of the State Government through this new system, for landlords and residents to become active participants in refuse evacuation.

The overall objective to sustain the fight to keep the environment clean, remove waste bins from major roads and reduce and health risk to citizens.
"Details of the relevant levy and schedule of payment by landlords and residents are being worked out and will be announced later,” the governor stated.
He also advised residents to watch out for waste disposal contractors who will be moving from house to house to distribute waste disposal bins.
He urged residents to cooperate with them to ensure the success of the new approach to refuse disposal.
