Customs destroys smuggled goods

13 June 2013, 13:05

Abuja - - The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has destroyed smuggled frozen turkey worth N98.6 million (about $595 000).

The latest consignment was destroyed at the Lapite waste dump site following its interception last week.

It contained 19 750 cartons of turkey, 530 iron rods and 36 sheets of iron plates.

The Deputy Comptroller of the Oyo Command, Usman Bumba, presided over the destruction.

He urged residents of the area to desist from eating frozen poultry products.

"They are hazardous to health and hinders the growth of the national economy,” said Bumba.

Syndicates take advantage of Nigeria's leaky borders to smuggle products into the country.

The command in the last three weeks has seized 497 bags of rice, 139 bales of prohibited textiles, 621 used tyres, 600 bags of animal feeds, six cars, three trucks and a tipper.
