Customs hands over seized goods to NAFDAC

16 January 2013, 13:04

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone C, Owerri, has handed over seized goods worth N3 million to the National Agency for Foods and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

Handing over the goods in Owerri on Tuesday, Mr Mohammed Biu, the Customs Area Comptroller of the unit, said that the goods comprised unregistered drugs, drinks and baby foods.

He said that the seizures were made by his unit between September and December 2012.

``They include 50 cartons of various medicaments, nine cartons of Analgin injection, 135 crates of assorted energy drinks and 13 cartons of Cerelac baby milk.''

The comptroller said that the goods were transferred to the custody of NAFDAC in view of inter-agencies’ cooperation and due to the unit’s inability to confirm the NAFDAC certification.

``We took time to verify the goods before handing them over.

``Any goods that doesn’t have NAFDAC number is questionable and can be poisonous.''

He urged members of the public to always alert the service whenever such fake goods and products were discovered.

Responding, Mr Victor Mmamel, the Head of NAFDAC in Owerri, representing the Director General, Dr Paul Orhii, said that Analgin injections had been banned in the country for a long time.

Mmamel said that samples of the seized goods had been collected for further investigation and necessary action.

He commended the customs for its efforts.
