Customs impounds bales of second hand clothing

24 May 2013, 16:02

Owerri- The Federal Operations Unit Zone 'C' of the Nigeria Customs Service said it impounded 70 bales of second-hand clothing and 23 rolls of textile materials smuggled into the country.

The Area Comptroller of Customs in the zone, Victor Dimka, made this known on Friday in Owerri in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Ifeoma Onuigbo.

Dimka said the textile materials were concealed in a sand-tipping truck, adding that the duty paid value on the contraband stood at N8.24 million.

He said that the use of tipping-trucks with inscription ‘Human Rights against Corruption’ demonstrated how desperate smugglers had become.

He said that a team led by a Superintendent of Customs, intercepted the truck along Uyo axis in Akwa Ibom and arrested one suspect within the week.

Dimka said that smugglers would not beat the eagle eyes of customs officials no matter the strategy they adopted.

He said investigation was underway.
