Delegate seeks strengthening of local councils

28 April 2014, 15:29

Ilorin - A delegate to the National Conference, Abubakar Sadiq, has advocated the strengthening of local government councils  to boost development at the grassroots.

Sadiq, who represents the Forum of Former Local Government Chairmen at the conference, made the call in llorin on Sunday while speaking with newsmen

He said the only way to bring development to the grassroots was through adequate funding and strengthening of  local councils.

Sadiq opposed  those calling for the abrogation of the local government tier, saying that it was a bridge between the people and any system of government.

He said that everything possible should be done to ensure that local governments were given their rightful position in governance.

Sadiq said bad governance was one of the major problems confronting the nation, adding that various committees and sub-committees had been set up by the conference to tackle this.

He expressed optimism that the recommendations of the committees would be beneficial to the entire citizens if implemented and appealed to Nigerians to have confidence in the conference.
