Abuja - Delta State has uncovered 600 illegal private schools mushrooming across the state, a senior education expert has said.
Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Schools Education, Professor Patrick Muoboghare, said the existence of unregistered schools in the state is a huge cause for concern arguing that such schools were contributing to the low standards of education in the state.
Muoboghare said the schools were uncovered by the education ministry during the course of its assessment of existing schools in the state.
He said the assesment of existing schools was carried out as part of the first phase of the ministry’s surveillance aimed at establishing the exact operational and official status of the institutions.
Muoboghare said the ministry would soon mount campaigns on the issue in the media, as part of its efforts to enlighten the public on the dangers inherent in dealing with such schools.
The commissioner said that the battle against unregistered schools remained a critical element in the efforts of the government to raise the standard of education in the state and that of Nigeria as a whole.
