Drivers face prosecution for fake licenses

03 March 2014, 07:44Augustine Osayande

Abuja - The Federal Road Safety Corps has concluded plans to prosecute holders of fake driver’s license through jail terms.

This is part of measures to sustain the integrity of the Nigerian driver’s license.

The FRSC Marshal and Chief Executive, Osita Chidoka, disclosed this during a pre-annual lecture press conference in Abuja.

He said any motorist caught with a fake driver’s license, would be prosecuted.

The Corps Marshal also said that such motorists would have their vehicles impounded while a criminal charge of possession of fake identity documents would be added to the offence of possessing a fake driver’s license.

“Let me tell motorists that anybody we arrest with a fake driver’s license, we are sending straight to court,” he said.

He added, “We are impounding that vehicle because you are not authorized to drive on Nigerian roads and we will not only stop with license violation but will also ask the police to include criminal charges of possession of fake identity document,” Chidoka added.

The Corps Marshal however, appealed to those intending to obtain the driver’s license not to apply by proxy but go through the normal process which may appear though cumbersome due to network issues which often arose during the online transaction.

“It is important that you go through the normal process and get it driver’s license the normal process is cumbersome for some people, it takes time,” Chidoka said.
