Drug agency seizes 2 000kg of indian hemp

07 November 2014, 19:14

Lokoja - The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kogi said on Thursday that it seized 2 103.7 kilogrammes of weeds suspected to be Indian Hemp within the last one week.

The Commander of the state command, Idris Bello, disclosed this in Lokoja.

He said the command arrested two suspected dealers and confiscated an articulated lorry used in ferrying the prohibited drugs across the state.

Bello said that the suspected dealers (names withheld) were arrested on the Lokoja-Abuja highway with about 124 bags of Cannabis Sativa (Indian Hemp) concealed in false compartment in an articulated lorry with Nasarawa state vehicle registration.

The commander explained that barely 24 hours later, the command intercepted another articulated vehicle with 104 bags of cannabis weighing 978 kg.

He said that operatives of the Ajaokuta Area Command who were on routine patrol on Wednesday morning tried to flag down the driver of the articulated vehicle with an Edo number plate RRU 139 XA but he refused to stop.

But he said his officers nabbed with the vehicle along Okene-Auchi road when the driver opted to abandon it in the middle of the road and escaped into bush.

Similarly, he said another 32-year-old housewife, Biriki Abdullahi, was also arrested for being in possession of about 800 grams of substance suspected to be cannabis.

He said that the housewife, a mother of three, claimed that the consignment belonged to her husband who had escaped, leaving her with the three children knowing that men of the command were on his trail.

Bello said that the suspects would be charged to court after investigation was completed.
