23 July 2013, 07:31Emeka Adebanji

Abuja - The government is confident that the East-West Road, currently under construction will be completed as scheduled.

The highway, which is poised to connect all the cities in the Niger/Delta States, is set for completion in December 2014.

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godsday Orubebe assured an audience consisting of delegation of the Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU), who had raised concern at the sloth chartacterising construction.

He assured the delegation that President Goodluck Jonathan had approved a financial plan that would ensure the East-West road project, which was handed over to his Ministry for supervision in 2010, was completed without further delays.

Out of 42 bridges and 1 040 culverts needed on the road, 36 bridges and 860 culverts had already been completed, while two more bridges will be completed by the middle of next month.

The construction of the 338-kilometer road which is connecting all the Niger/Delta States started since 2006.
