Ebola: Edo reports clean bill of health

Edo -  Edo State said surveillance activities have established no trace of the deadly Ebola virus in the area.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Aihanuwa Eregie, said the State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the World Health Organization(WHO) and other health partners, had carried out disease surveillance
activities in all parts of the state to ensure early detection of any outbreak and the timely containment of the occurrence.

She nonetheless urged citizens to be extra vigilant to prevent the outbreak of the virus because of the highly contagious nature of the disease.

"Ebola virus is a deadly infectious viral hemorrhagic disease that affects humans and is usually transmitted from infected persons to another by direct close contact through body fluids and secretion," Eregie informed.

She stressed that any suspicious case in the community should be reported to the nearest health facility, the Local Government or state Ministry of Health immediately.

West Africa is battling the worst recorded Ebola outbreak in history with 700 deaths reported at the time of going to press.

Following the outbreak of the Ebola disease in some parts of the continent, Nigeria has stated that it has placed 69 persons who had first contact with the Liberian-born victim of the virus, Patrick Sawyer, on
