Ebonyi awards scholarship to 103 outstanding students

05 December 2013, 17:00

Abakaliki - The Ebonyi Government has offered scholarship to 103 outstanding secondary school students in the last two years, the Director of the State Scholarship Board, Elijah Ituma, has said.

Ituma told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abakaliki that the beneficiaries were winners of inter schools debate, quiz, essay, drama and public speech competitions in 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 academic sessions.

The scholarship grant is designed to encourage the outstanding students in these various categories of competitions.

"Again, the measure is to reward excellence and hard work among students and to further spur them to greater achievements," he said.

The director said the award was part of efforts to deepen reading culture among secondary school students as well as enable them to develop their intellectual potentials.

He reiterated government’s determination at ensuring that brilliant students were assisted to aspire for greater academic endeavours.

He said through the initiative, indigent but bright students from secondary level had been encouraged to realise their academic dreams.

Ituma said that the government had repositioned the secondary school system for better quality and functional education.

"Secondary education is a critical phase in the educational attainment of any individual; therefore every attempt is being made to put our secondary school system in proper shape,” he said.

He also said that the government was encouraging efforts toward competitive learning among students of secondary schools through curricula and extra curricula activities.
