Lafia - The Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board (NASUBEB) says it has awarded a N1 billion contract for the construction of furniture for primary and junior secondary schools in the state.The General Manager of the state’s Vocational and Relevant Technology, Skills Acquisition Board, Alhaji Ibrahim Adamu disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lafia.Adamu said that the contract was awarded to his organisation and that the proceeds from the contract would be used to buy more equipment and to empower the more than 2 000 graduate trainees in the centre.He said that most of these trainees were yet to be empowered to start their own businesses, adding that they would also be actively engaged in the execution of the contract.The general manager said that the award of the contract to the centre was in keeping with the state government’s commitment to youth empowerment.He said that the contract, which include the production of desks and tables, would be completed within 12 weeks.Adamu also said that the state government had already signed a Memoranda of Understanding with the Singapore Institute of Technical Education to help develop the vocational centres in the state."As you are aware, a team from Singapore was in the state last week to assess the vocational centres in the state and it was able to identify areas of intervention and partnership," he said.Adamu said the Singapore Institute would also produce a new syllabus for the state's vocational centres that would incorporate modern technology.He said the Singaporean experts would be in the state from February 2013, adding that the major areas of focus would be Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Mechantronics.- NAN
