Ekiti to blacklist convicted rapists

08 October 2013, 11:04

Ado-Ekiti - Anybody convicted of rape and other violent acts against women and children in Ekiti will be blacklisted, Wale Fapohunda, the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, has said.

Fapohunda stated this at a forum on Criminal Justice in Ado-Ekiti on Monday.

He said the state government was alarmed at the daily occurrence of criminal cases relating to rape and other violent attacks on women and children.

According to him, the state government has decided to open a register for sexual offenders before the end of the year.

He said the register would contain the names and data of those arrested, prosecuted and later found guilty of rape-related offences.

The commissioner said the names in the register would be published in major newspapers at the end of every year for the general public to know them and the homes they come from.

Fapohunda said that the state government was not happy with the way innocent young girls were being gang-raped almost on a daily basis.
