Emir calls for increase in village head allowances

12 August 2013, 07:15Augustine Osayande

Abuja - A high-ranking Muslim official urged government to increase allowances for village heads to motivate them to tackle security challenges that the country faced.

Kabir Usman, the Emir of Katsina, called on the government to increase the payment to N500 (US$3) per month.

"Both village and ward heads are very close to people at the grassroots and boosting their allowance would help them check anyone trying to disturb the peace at the community level. Village and ward heads know everyone in their communities as well as people that are new in the communities hence they are able to effectively monitor what is happening around them and report same to relevant authorities," Usman said.

"Boosting their allowances would assist them flush out bad eggs as well as help improve the security situation in their various communities."

Usman called on youths to refrain from drug abuse and other related vices.
He urged parents to always check on their children to ensure they did not use substances that could harm their health.

He appealed for more prayers for continued peace, progress and harmony among Nigerians as well as for divine intervention to end the security situation in some parts of the country.
