The Nigerian Metrological Agency (NIMET) has blamed the current flooding being experience in different parts of Nigeria on natural and human factors.
Mr Ifeanyi Nnodu, the Director, Weather Forecasting Services, NIMET said this in Abuja on Thursday.
He said factors such as excessive rainfall, blocked drains and runoff from rivers and streams could be responsible for flooding.
``When the volume of rainfall cannot be absorbed by the soil or when the rate of rainfall is more than the rate of absorbing capacity of the soil, then flooding will be experienced.
``It happened mainly this year due to environmental lawlessness because people fail to regulate and control their drains.
``In Lagos, we had episodes of rainfall than the soil could absorb; we had rainfall for four days consecutively but because the drains and the water could not flow properly to the rivers, they caused flooding.’’
Nnodu said that NIMET 2012 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction (SRP) forecast a normal rainfall in the country, saying what is predicted was normal rainfall and we are still seeing normal rainfall in the country.
``But human practices have caused the flooding because the drains are blocked and the water could not flow into proper channels; when things are not done in the right way that we should do it, we will have flooding.
``That is the reason why NIMET and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) always advise people to clean their drains always because it is not every excessive rainfall or runoff that can cause flooding.
Anthony Anuforom, the NIMET Director General in February during the 2012, SRP presentation, had predicted that Nigeria was expected to witness normal rainfall in year.
He said some parts of the country were expected to experience flooding and warned that unless the state governments and people took appropriate steps to prevent it, flooding might affect lives and properties.
Anuforom said the essence of the presentation was to alert the state governments, farmers, aviation stakeholders and others that rely on weather and rainfall predictions in planning their activities to take precaution.
