Abuja - The Economic and Financial Crimes commission (EFCC) has arraigned the former accountant general of Taraba State, Joel Joseph Lenbang, for allegedly defrauding the state to the tune of N5 million.
He has been arraigned on an eight-count charge at the Federal High Court Jalingo.
Although the accused person pleaded not guilty to the charges, the prosecuting counsel, Al’quasam Jaa’far through an oral application requested the court to fix a date for proper prosecution while the accused person be remanded in prison custody.
The defense counsel, Abayomi Akomode, who did not oppose the position of the prosecuting counsel pleaded that instead of the prison custody, the accused be left in police detention in Jalingo or be taken to EFCC cells in Gombe.
Jaa’far insisted that the accused be remanded in the Federal Prison Jalingo because that is the proper thing since the court has taken cognizance of charges.
The defense counsel headed however filed a motion on notice applying for the accused to be granted bail but the motion was not argued as the defense counsel informed the court that he was just served the motion an hour ago.
The Presiding Judge, Donatus Okorowo, fixed Friday for hearing of the motion on notice for bail application and directed that the accused be remanded at the Federal Prisons in Jalingo.
