Onitsha - The Nteje Unit Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) near Onitsha, Anambra, has arrested over 100 motorists for various traffic offences in 43 days (Jan. 1 to date).
The offences include not wearing seatbelt, using cell-phone while driving and refusal to obey road signs, among others.
The Commander of the unit, Mr Sunday Joseph, disclosed this on Tuesday in Nteje while reacting to the incessant auto-crashes along the Onitsha-Enugu road.
Joseph attributed the increasing incidents of auto-crashes on the road to on-going road re-construction.
``I have just visited Consolidated Construction Company (CCC), the construction firm handling the project, to ascertain from them how motorists could use the road.
``The congestion on the road is caused by the the fact that only one lane is serving motorists some of whom have refused to obey traffic laws and regulations.
``I advise motorists to change their attitude and think more about safety,’’ he pleaded.
Joseph, however expressed satisfaction that the company handling the project had done a ''reasonable job'’ on the road.
``But it (CCC) still needs to do more and we appeal to them to put diversion signs on the road to guide motorists,’’ he said.
The commander said that officers and men of the unit had also been positioned at strategic locations on the road to direct the motorists.
