-Kafanchan - Kafanchan Unit Command of the Federal Roads Safety Commission (FRSC), on Tuesday arrested 67 vehicles during a mobile court operation along Abuja-Gidan Waya-Jos federal highway.
The Unit Commander, Mr Jacob Oyima, said directives for the exercise came from the FRSC headquarters, adding that it was meant to sanction motorists who usually refused to stop for routine inspection on the highway.
``The Commission is more concerned with safety of lives and property on the highways than arresting violators, but the attitudes of some motorists necessitated the exercise.’’
Oyima said due to the rude and careless attitude of motorists, the commission had to engage the assistance of police and military personnel to ensure the enforcement of the mobile court's judgments.
He said out of the 67 motorists whose vehicles were arrested, 59 were convicted while 8 were discharged.
The Commander said the fines slammed on the motorists were meant to force them to put their vehicles in order and not serve as a source of revenue for the commission.
He urged motorists to ensure that their vehicles were road worthy, drive with caution and observe traffic rules and regulations.
Chief Magistrate Sammy Daka of Kafanchan Magistrate Court, who presided over the mobile court, fined motorists for violations ranging from overloading, blocking of road, use of unregistered number plates, refusal to use seat belt and over speeding.
Daka cautioned commercial vehicle drivers against making money at the expense of the lives of innocent passengers.
NAN reports that the fine imposed by the court was between N1,000 and N10,000, depending on the gravity of offence.
