FRSC impounds 5 overloaded trucks

22 November 2012, 14:13

Lagos - The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Thursday said that it has seized five trucks on the Badagry – Lagos Expressway for overloading.

Mr Su Galadunsi, FRSC Unit Commander in Badagry, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the overloaded trucks were conveying various goods from Seme border to Lagos.

"We all know about the deplorable state of the Lagos - Badagry expressway.

"With the state of the road, we cannot allow such trucks to ply the road because they constitute danger to themselves and other motorists", Galadunsi said.

The Unit Commander urged drivers to desist from overloading of trucks, saying that it was dangerous and often resulted to accidents.

The FRSC official added that the trucks were also impounded for driving with damaged head and rear lights and without valid drivers' licence, as well as inability to provide fire extinguisher and C-Caution.

"Most of them move in the night and yet they drive with bad lights.

“This is not good for the safety of the driver and other motorists who ply the road," the Unit Commander stated.

He urged motorists to always comply with the traffic laws to ensure safety on the roads.

NAN reports that the registration numbers of the trucks were; XQ 983 KSF, BDF 271 XA, AG 3726 TG, XP 263 AAA and AL 6346 RBCR ( Benin Republic number plate).

NAN reports that an occupant of a Mazda car died on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway on Wednesday when a container on the back of a trailer fell on the vehicle.

Eyewitnesses said that the car and the trailer with number plate NJ 339 ARB were both heading towards Badagry when the incident occurred.

Austin Akhigbe, who witnessed the accident, said both vehicles were trying to navigate a pothole on the road and as the car tried to speed past, the container fell on it and crushed the passenger.
