Umuahia - Property worth millions of naira were destroyed on Sunday night when fire gutted `Yellow House' at the Federal Government’s Girls’ College, Umuahia.
This is the second fire incident in the school within three months, as a similar fire incident on December 9, 2013, affected a block in 'Purple House'.
The Principal of the college, Dr Ernest Chukwuka, told newsmen in Umuahia on Monday that the incident happened at about 9 p.m.
Chukwuka, however, thanked God that nobody was hurt in incident which occurred when the students were having their night preparatory study.
He said that all the personal belongings of the 119 students in the hostel were destroyed by the fire before it was put out by men of the State Fire Service.
The principal said that the school authorities had taken measures to ensure that the incident did not disrupt academic activities in the school but did not disclose the cause of the fire.
He said that steps had also been taken to temporarily relocate the affected students.
As at the time of the visit, students were seen taking lessons in their classrooms.
Meanwhile, Governor Theodore Orji has directed a full investigation into the incident to ascertain the cause.
Orji gave the directive when he led some top government functionaries to the scene of the incident.
A press statement by the governor's Chief Press Secretary, Charles Ajunwa, said that Orji announced a N2 million donation to help the affected students to replace their lost items.
He said that government would take steps to ensure adequate security of life and property in the school.
