Yenagoa - The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Bayelsa says it arrested five suspects, three boats and 550 jerry-cans in connection with oil theft in the last three months.
The state Commandant of the corps, Desmond Agu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Yenagoa that the suspects had been charged to court.
Agu, who decried the high rate of oil theft, said the menace was a threat to the nation’s economy.
"We have also discovered some illegal refineries in Yenagoa and in the creeks of the state.
“We are doing our best, but our challenge is logistics.
“We need equipment such as vehicles and modern techniques to boost our operations in Bayelsa.
“You cannot catch a thief with bare hands, at least you must be equipped with arms to do such work effectively,” Agu said.
On the command relationship with other security agencies in the state, he said that members of the Joint Task Force (JTF) had been helpful.
He urged the public to report any suspicious movement around the NNPC pipeline corridors to the command for prompt action.
