German woman swindled in hoax romance scheme

Lagos - An Imo State suspect will soon appear in court following his arrest for allegedly defrauding an elderly German woman of €14 250 in an online love scam.

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested Sunday Onyena Chidiebere (27) for allegedly swindling the 70-year-old woman only named as Marie.

The suspect, who is a Promoter and Event Manager based in Abuja was alleged to have met the victim on one of the social media platforms in 2011 and developed a relationship with her.

In the course of the relationship, Chidiebere is said to have started making demands for cash from the German for different reasons, especially money for processing Visa to enable him visit her in Germany.

The victim, on several occasions, sent money to Chidiebere to meet his demands.

“After an endless wait, it dawned on the victim that she had been scammed, hence her petition to the EFCC,” Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC spokesperson, said.

He said the suspect will soon be arraigned in court.
