Global Day of Parents celebrated in Abuja

01 June 2015, 15:08 Okoro Chinedu

Lagos - Nigeria has joined the international community to celebrate the United Nations Global Day of Parents.

The Universal Peace Federation is leading local commemorations in Abuja, featuring a roundtable discussion on “Raising Leaders with the Heart of Parents.”

“We are seeking to increase awareness on the significance of the day as well as the importance of parenthood and parenting. We are hopeful that at the end of the discussion, participants will be inspired by the UPF Vision of True Parents and be empowered to be active parents in their families as well as extend the family model of parental leadership to the wider society," Dr Raphael Ogar Oko, Secretary General of UPF told CAJ News.

"We believe that if leaders have parental hearts, then citizens will be served as their children and instead of a focus on the rule of laws, leaders will seek to lead with parental love," he added.

“By promoting parental leadership, we can a society where citizens live as a family, with leaders as parents and citizens as their children and therefore are brothers and sisters," said Oko.

"We have witnessed the declining influence of parents over their children and the attendant consequence of all forms of social vices. To halt this ugly trend and create a peaceful society, there is the need to empower and connect parents to information, each other and to resources for parenting.”

The Global Day of Parents is observed on the 1st of June every year.

The UN General Assembly proclaimed the day in 2012 to honour parents throughout the world.

The Global Day provides an opportunity to appreciate all parents in all parts of the world for their selfless commitment to children and their lifelong sacrifice towards nurturing this relationship.
